When perfomring an abdominal ultrasound followed by a pelvic ultrasound the same day, a special preparation is needed:

No food, no smoking, no chewing gum and no carbonated drinks from 10pm the day before the exam. You may drink small amounts of juice, water or clear tea/coffee up to 4 hours before the exam, but nothing after that time. If you are diabetic, do not take your insulin/diabetic pills until after the abdominal exam is complete.

After the abdominal ultrasound is complete, we will as you to drink 1.5 litres of clear fluid and then wait approximately 1 hour before we perform the pelvic ultrasound exam. During that time, you will be asked to refrain from emptying your bladder. Your bladder must be full for this exam.

Expect to be at the clinic for at least 2 hours from the start of the abdominal exam to the end of the pelvic exam.
